3270 - Configuring QWS3270 3.x

The 3.x version of QWS3270 has a different arrangement of the toolbar drop-down menus than the newer 4.x version of QWS3270. It is recommended that you install the newer version of QWS3270 according to the directions given at 3270 - Installing and configuring QWS3270 4.x as QWS3270 3.x is no longer available for download.

1. Open QWS3270 to view the main screen, as shown below. Click on Options, then on Application.

   

2. Select the Startup Option marked Auto Connect, as shown below, to allow QWS3270 to automatically connect to the mainframe after starting QWS3270. You may also want to check the box next to Disable Splash Screen, to get rid of the advertisement on startup.

   

3. From the Options menu, select Session, and click on the Host Settings icon, as shown below. Enter blue.doit.wisc.edu for the Host Name to tell QWS3270 to connect to the correct mainframe.

   

4. On the same screen, leave the port as 23 and verify that the Terminal Type is set to IBM-3278-2 (or -2-E or 3279). Otherwise, some of the function keys will not work properly and you may not be able to connect to IMSVS.

5. QWS3270 should now be configured to connect to the DoIT Mainframe automatically upon opening the program. To test this, close QWS3270 and try reopening it. It should connect successfully, as shown below.

   

Optional Settings

There are additional changes you may wish to make to the QWS3270 client per your personal tastes.

• You can change the behavior of the Copy/Paste selection. By selecting Block Mode, as shown below, you will be able to be more selective when highlighting items.

  

• The Display Options section, as shown below, allows the user to set the font and its size. Click on Select Font to change these settings.

  

• Select the font, its size, and its style to match your taste.

  

• One of the default options is a dark blue text over a black background, which is very difficult to view. By selecting the Colour icon and then selecting 3279 blue you can then select some lighter color for better viewing.
