WebSurvey@UW - Item Types: Questions
This document describes the different question types that are available in WebSurvey@UW.
Question item types request a response from the user. There are different question item types which can be used to request information in different ways. Here is a brief description of these different types of question items.
Choice – Multiple Answers (Checkboxes)

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Random Order – check if you want your answers to be displayed in a random order for the survey taker.
- Answer alignment – vertical or horizontal
- Maximum number of checkboxes that can be checked.
- Minimum number of checkboxes that must be checked.
- Use “Select answer group” tool to use preset ranges of answers, or type in your own answers manually.
- Select default answer – will appear as checked to the survey taker.
- Assign point values for scored surveys.
- “Allow additional answer” tool allows users to select an “Other” button and enter text in a box as their answer.

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Random Order – check if you want your answers to be displayed in a random order for the survey taker.
- Use “Select answer group” tool to use preset ranges of answers, or type in your own answers manually.
- Select default answer – will appear as selected to the survey taker.
- Assign point values for scored surveys.
Choice – One Answer (Option Buttons)

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Random Order – check if you want your answers to be displayed in a random order for the survey taker.
- Answer alignment – vertical or horizontal

Choice – True/False

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Select default answer – will appear as selected to the survey taker.
- Options can be displayed in a dropdown menu, or as vertical or horizontal radio buttons. Horizontal radio buttons are shown in the example above.
Choice – Yes/No

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Select default answer – will appear as selected to the survey taker.
- Options can be displayed in a dropdown menu, or as vertical or horizontal radio buttons. Horizontal radio buttons are shown in the example above.

Matrix – Rating Scale (Numeric)

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Random Order – check if you want your answers to be displayed in a random order for the survey taker.
- Beginning Number.
- Ending Number.
- Row Heading Width – Set the width of each column to accommodate your row heading names.
- Row Names.
Open Ended – Comments Box

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Default value – will be displayed in the comments box to the survey taker.
- 4,000 character limit for user responses.
Open Ended – Constant Sum

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Random Order – check if you want your answers to be displayed in a random order for the survey taker.
- Answer total – the total that the value must add up to, leave blank to allow any total.
- Row Heading Width – Set the width of each column to accommodate your row heading names.
- Row Names.
Open Ended – Date

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Minimum Value – the earliest acceptable date.
- Maximum Value – the latest acceptable date.
Open Ended – Number

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Default value – will be displayed to the survey taker.
- Minimum value – the smallest acceptable numeric value.
- Maximum value – the largest acceptable numeric value.
- Maximum length – the maximum number of characters allowed for this question.
Open Ended – One Line

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Email address – check if the answer to this question must be a valid email address.
- Default value – will be displayed to the survey taker.
- Maximum length – the maximum number of characters allowed for this question.
Open Ended – One or More Lines

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Random Order – check if you want your answers to be displayed in a random order for the survey taker.
- Minimum number of responses
- Maximum number of responses
- Maximum length – the maximum number of characters allowed for this question.
- Row Heading Width – Set the width of each column to accommodate your row heading names.
- Row Names.
Open Ended – Ranking

Options include:
- Required – check if your survey taker must answer to continue with the survey.
- Random Order – check if you want your answers to be displayed in a random order for the survey taker.
- Row Heading Width – Set the width of each column to accommodate your row heading names.
- Row Names.
