Eudora (Win) - Configuring Smtpauth for non-WiscMail Accounts

This Document contains directions on configuring Eudora to Use SMTP Relay Personalities. This should allow someone to setup Eudora to check their departmental email address AND send email through the WiscMail server using a NetID to authenticate.

For Example, if your primary email address is your departmental email address (bucky.badger@department.wisc.edu), and your WiscMail address is bbadger@wisc.edu, but you don't check this email account. The only way to send message with SMTPAuth is to authenticate with your WiscMail account information. Most email clients allow you to specify an alternative username to send mail; Eudora does not.

In Eudora, it is still possible to set this up, but it is not an intuitive solution. The following directions will walk you through this process:

Eudora
Best Effort Only
NOTE: Eudora is no longer available for download through DoIT. The Help Desk provides best effort support for Eudora only. Users of Eudora are strongly encouraged to migrate to a new email client.

For help migrating from Eudora to a new email client, please see WiscMail - Migrating from Eudora to a New Client.

These directions assume that Eudora is already set up to check your departmental email correctly.

  1. First we need to creat a new personality in Eudora for your WiscMail (non-departmental) Account. Open Eudora, and go to Tools--> Personalities. A window will appear displaying your personalities.
  2. screenshot showing where tools-->Personalities is located
  3. Right-click in a blank area of the personalities window, and select New....
  4. screenshot showing the new menu
  5. In the "New Account Wizard" that appears, select Skip directly to advanced account setup, and click Finish.
  6. First screenshot of the new account wizard. Select 'Skip directly to advanced account setup'
  7. On the "Create New Account" screen, fill out the information as follows:
    • Personality Name: WiscMail
    • Real Name: Your name as you'd like it to appear on emails. (e.g. Bucky Badger)
    • Return Address: Your departmental email address (e.g. bucky.badger@department.wisc.edu)
    • Login Name: Your NetID for WiscMail (e.g. bbadger).
    • SMTP Server: smtpauth.wiscmail.wisc.edu
    • Authentication allowed: Should be checked.
    • Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, STARTTLS
    • Check Mail: Should NOT be checked.
Then click on the Incoming Mail tab.
  8. Settings to enter in the 'Create New Account' screen
  9. On the "Incoming Mail" tab of the new personality screen, make the following changes:
    • Server: wiscmail.wisc.edu
    • Configuration: IMAP
    • Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
Then click OK to close this Account setup window.
  10. Settings to enter on the 'Incoming Mail' tab
  11. Go to Tools--> Options, and click on the Sending Mail icon.

Change the following settings on this screen:

    • SMTP server: smtpauth.wiscmail.wisc.edu
    • SMTP Relay Personality: WiscMail
    • Allow Authentication should be checked.
    • Secure Sockets when Sending: Required, STARTTLS
Click OK to save these settings.
  12. Settings to put in the 'Sending Mail' options screen

It is probably a good idea to send yourself a test message to make sure this is set up correctly.

When you send a message, you should see a "Enter Password" screen. Type in your WiscMail accounts password to send messages (not your Departmental Email accounts password).

Enter Password screen as seen when sending messages
