WiscMail / WiscMail Plus - AntiVirus Software Incompatible with SMTP Authentication
Some versions of Norton AntiVirus (NAV) and Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) are incompatible with the WiscMail SMTP Authentication service (this service verifies your NetID and password before allowing your desktop email client to send messages). To resolve these problems, disable scanning of outgoing e-mails in NAV. This does not increase the chances of sending a virus by e-mail because the WiscMail SMTP servers scan for viruses and will remove any that are found.
The e-mail client configured to use the SMTP Auth service will not be able to send mail. It will often show an error indicating that the server does not support SSL or a secure connection could not be established.
To resolve a conflict between Norton AntiVirus and the WiscMail SMTP Auth service, disable virus scanning on outgoing e-mails.
The Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition does not seem to have this problem. This is available for free download to UW students, faculty, and staff. A CD can also be picked up in the Tech Store Showroom during normal business hours (7:45am-5pm, M-F). Faculty and staff should contact their local IT staff or the DoIT Help Desk for more information.
Departmental IT staff may prefer that you use the "managed" version of Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition on your office computer. This slightly different version can also be downloaded free, but requires departments to first obtain the "free" license from the DoIT Tech Store. Departments should order items 26595 (Annual License) and 26572 (Startup Fee) for Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition for each departmental computer. The cost of these items is $0, but the order process is being used to meet license requirements. For more information, contact the DoIT Tech Store Showroom at 265-7469 or firstname.lastname@example.org. To order these items contact Tech Store Sales at 262-7253 or email@example.com.
